Performances

Columbus Symphony Orchestra Thursday, October 18, 2007 The Southern Ohio Performing Arts Association welcomes the Columbus Symphony Orchestra in a special season opening concert featuring the current Van Cliburn gold medalist winner, Alexander Kobrin, as well as the newly appointed CSO maestro, Junichi Hirokami. The concert features the Concerto No. 2 by Sergei Rachmaninoff. The maestro conducted the CSO in the Vern Riffe Center for the Arts as part of the 2005-2006 season prior to his appointment and we are honored by his return. Cirque Des Amis Tuesday, October 30, 2007 “Circus of Friends,” the show from the famous Montreal based Cirque School, combines high circus arts with exhibitions of daring on the trapeze, nostalgic costumes, eclectic music, evocative lighting and creative choreography. The artistic sensibility, originality and virtuosity of Cirque Des Amis’s performers have so far thrilled more than three million spectators in some 200 cities and 20 countries worldwide. It’s two hours of fun calculated to please children and adults alike. The Ten Tenors Thursday, November 8, 2007 The Ten Tenors were born as a classical musical group while they were full time students at the Queensland Conservatorium of Music in Australia in 1995. Their repertoire has evolved to include a variety of musical styles from Bach to the Bee Gees to selections written by members of the group. Join the 77 million that have heard them on four different continents for an evening of incredible singing. The Producers Saturday, January 12, 2008 Based on Mel Brooks’ hilarious movie of 1968, “The Producers” came to the Broadway musical stage in 2001 and amassed an amazing 12 Tony Awards including Best Musical. Brooks created one of the most daring and critical pieces ever conceived on film or on stage as he poked fun at the world of musical theater through the hilariously entertaining treatment of taboo subjects ranging from the production number “It’s Springtime for Hitler” to a spoof of alternative life styles. This is definitely an evening of adult humor and satire with great music and dance numbers as only a Broadway musical from Mel Brooks could deliver. 4-ISH! Tuesday, February 5, 2008 The name 4-ISH comes from the suffix “ish” which is used to describe the indefinable. But to try to describe it one might say it’s STOMP-ish, it’s skate-ish, a little hip hop-ish, it’s beatbox-ish. Now you get the idea. Don’t blink! You don’t want to miss one zoom, whoosh, flip, leap and twist of this internationally acclaimed dance and skate spectacular created by the world’s leading skaters, dj’s and hip-hop dancers. Amsterdam’s hottest young troupe, 4-ISH, brings unparalleled talent, explosive energy and fearless skill to this performance filled with humor, inline skating, acrobatics, martial arts and one ultra fine beatboxer. So eyes on the halfpipes and sit tight. This is going to be one wild theatrical ride for children of all ages! Wilberforce University Choir Thursday, February 21, 2008 In celebration of Black History Month, this outstanding vocal ensemble, officially returns after last season’s impromptu serenade of Ms. Kathleen Battle in the grand lobby of the Vern Riffe Center. Their talent, under the direction of Dr. Jeremy Winston, holder of the Ray Charles Distinguished Chair of Sacred and Choral Music, has brought national recognition as part of the soundtrack to the movie “Amazing Grace,” a biography of William Wilberforce. This is a not-to-be-missed event on our calendar. Ring of Fire Monday, March 31, 2008 “Ring of Fire” blazes across the stage with the power to draw you back to your roots as only country music can. The Johnny Cash story is one of love and faith, success and struggle, home and family, rowdiness and redemption. You will tap your toes, stomp your feet and shout for more of the unique songs of the “Man in Black.” Your heart, mind and soul will be touched by such songs as “Walk the Line”, “Folsom Prison Blues” and the title song, “Ring of Fire.” Gypsy Thursday, April 24, 2008 Gypsy is the quintessential backstage musical, for many the best ever written. It tells the tale of vaudeville entertainer Gypsy Rose Lee, her sister, June Haver and their larger-than-life mother, Mama Rose. With a solid script by Arthur Laurents, an enduring score by Jule Styne and Sephen Sondheim’s lyrics, the show has retained all of its freshness and emotional strength and produced more than its share of Broadway standards, including “Everything’s Coming Up Roses,” “Small World,” and “Let Me Entertain You.” 1964: The Tribute Thursday, May 8, 2008 When the lights go down, these four extraordinary musicians don’t simply sound like the Beatles, they BECOME “The Beatles”! Four decades melt away and you’re again listening to the sound that shook the world - the sound that held teens in its grasp for a full generation the world over. They have appeared seven times at Carnegie Hall and Rolling Stone Magazine calls them the best Beatles tribute on earth. Join us in this “time capsule” of musical history!
